King of the Jungle

Who is the King of the jungle? (ooh, ooh!)
Who is the King of the sea? (waddle, waddle, waddle)
Who is the King of the universe?
And who’s the King of me? I’ll tell you J-E-S-U-S. (Yes!)
He is the King of the sea. (waddle, waddle, waddle)
He is the King of the universe,
And He’s the King of me! (waddle, waddle, waddle)(ooh, ooh!)

KNIGHT WRITER: Aarushi

Hello! my name is Aarushi. I am the knight writer of this week. This week we are having a fun math game, in which everybody makes a road with sixteen squares. Mr. Ross rolls the dice and we are supposed to make numbers between 1000 and 10,000. Whoever finishes says ROCKET! The winner gets a prize. This week Joon, Jonathan, Vishal and Aidan won. We also played math around the world. Some of the boys were too quick for me to answer.
Nowadays we are having DRA and maths tests. Every day one person has assessment while others have to read. It’s actually too much reading. We also wrote a letter to God. It was fun to do. Everyone made a flag representing themselves. The class took a long time however all flags were awesome. In music everyone is composing a song about their believes and values. This week we started our swimming lessons as well.

Every day Mr. Ross reads us a funny story. We all enjoy it and laugh until our belly hurts. Mr. Ross also sings amazing songs to us. We had a wonderful week. Our next unit is poetry. Looking forward to it..........

Knight Writer Jude

My name is Jude Joung and I’m the knight writer for this week.  This week, Mr. Ross told us how to talk to aliens by using prime numbers in math class.  Everyone said it was fun learning how to talk to aliens including me.  Some of the my classmates thought they were really learning how to talk to aliens.

We also had time for Person of the Day.  This week, Jessica and Yuki were selected for the Person of the Day.   Person of the Day is when we have to tell our classmates about our family and also tell about what holidays we celebrate.   I think they were nervous because the principal was watching them.  They said it was scary. But they did well.  We also took a writing test.  Mr. Ross gave us pictures and let us pick what picture we wanted to write about.  And that’ s what we did this week.

Knight Writer : Aidan

Knight Writer

This is the first and second week of school so we (as in our class) have been mostly doing fun stuff and getting to know each other.  Things we have done included person of the day, listening and reading stories and a lot of other stuff. I am Aidan Anderson, the knight writer for this week.

The first day of school we walked into our new classroom, found our new desks and met our new teacher (who is very funny and very nice).  We have been doing a lot of talking about our new schedule and subjects.  We also did our essential agreements by writing down what helps us learn and what stops us from learning.  Then we compared our answers and whatever had the most votes would go on our essential agreements.

Mr. Ross tells a lot of funny stories.  He tells stories about his accident-prone cousin and other funny stories.  We also have been doing a lot of singing, so far only about christianity.  We also started our new unit about beliefs and values.  For our summative we get to write a song about our beliefs and values.  Another cool thing that we do is every time this robotic cat gets across the floor and out the door, we get to play cricket!  So far I think we are going to have a good school year.

Verse I:

To everything, turn, turn, turn,

           D G F#m A

             A D
A time to be born, a time to die.

          A D
A time to plant, a time to reap.

          A D

A time to laugh, a time to weep.

Verse II:

To everything, turn, turn, turn,
There is a season, turn, turn, turn,
And a time to every purpose under heaven.

A time to build up, a time to break down.
A time to dance, a time to mourn.
A time to cast away stones.
A time to gather stones together.

To everything, turn, turn, turn,
There is a season, turn, turn, turn,
And a time to every purpose under heaven.

A time of love, a time of hate.
A time of war, a time of peace.
A time you may embrace.
A time to refrain from embracing.

To everything, turn, turn, turn,
There is a season, turn, turn, turn,
And a time to every purpose under heaven.

A time to gain, a time to lose.
A time to rend, a time to sew.
A time to love, a time to hate.

Welcome!

Welcome to Grade 4R

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

I would like to introduce myself, I am Shane Ross, and this is my third year at GSIS.

I come from New Zealand and have a background in elementary teaching and second language acquisition. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Diploma of Teaching (elementary years). My interests include playing guitar, singing, and using new technology both in and out of the classroom. I love the beach and riding motorcycles.

Our classroom is a positive and challenging environment where ideas and questions are valued as a way of growing our shared knowledge. I am a life long learner, and I hope to instill my love of learning in your children.

I look forward to meeting you all in person.

Each student will need to provide the following items for class as soon as possible:

A backpack
A water bottle
A pair of gym shoes (this is to use in the gym so they cannot have black soles) to be kept at school
1 large box of tissues
1 pencil case
1 box of crayons or colored pencils

This year the elementary has moved to an 8 day cycle. Instructional time is unchanged.

Specialist classes this year are on the following days:

Day 1: Korean, Library
Day 2: P.E, Library
Day 3:  Performing Arts, Art
Day 4: Korean
Day 5: Art, P.E
Day 6: Performing Arts
Day 7: Performing Arts, Korean, Art
Day 8: Korean, P.E

Chapel: Day 3 and Day 7

Art – Miss Kim
Library – Mrs. lamb
Student Life Minister –  Mr. Lee

Birthdays

Birthdays are a wonderful celebration and you are welcome to bring along a cake or small snacks if you would like us to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, but please give me prior warning to this happening. As stated in the GSIS handbook, birthday invitations for parties out of school will only be handed out if the whole class has been invited.

Homework

Students in 4th Grade should be spending approximately 40 minutes on homework for four nights a week. Because each student is an individual and work at differing levels and some children will find the work easier than others, some children may get the homework completed quicker and others may take a little longer. I believe it is important to set pieces of work that reflect what we are studying in class and have a balance with homework and other extra curricular commitments. Homework grades are taken into account on report cards.

PE
For PE students are required to bring non-marking gym shoes, shorts or jog pants, and a t-shirt.
Elementary students will begin their first swimming unit from Tuesday 20th August – Friday 27th September 2013.  Students will begin on their next PE day.  If they are unable to participate they need to bring a doctor’s note.
Please remember to pack the following equipment:
Swim suit
Swim hat
Towel
Waterproof bag (plastic bag)
Goggles (only for Grades 2-5)

Working Together:
Your child’s education is important to me and I look forward to supporting their learning and development this year.

Ideas to support your child:

1. Encourage your child to always do their best.
2. Accept that all children develop at their own rate.
3. Speak to your child about school in a positive way.
4. Get involved with field trips and during activity times at school, where possible.
5. Communicate with me. Please contact me via phone (call to the school), write a message or email me at school rosss@gsis.sc.kr as soon as any questions arise. Also check online throughout the year for more grade 4 information at g4rosstable.blogspot.kr
6. Please provide your child with a quiet place at home to do their homework.
7. Please ensure that your child maintains a healthy diet and gets enough sleep each night.

Technology

  1.             Please follow us on Twitter @g4rosstable
